Subj: Mail Ordering Tips
PERSONAL COMPUTING/September 1987 "Letters" Column (pp. 15,16,19) reviews
PC Network mail order experiences like those TC/PC Members reported.
It also refers to suggestions offered by "Secrets To Mail Order Success"
(Strategies, July/87).
"Since ordering by mail ... involves some degreee of risk," mail order
consumers should heed these cardinal rules:
1. Seek out (written) money-back guarantees and warranties.
2. Order COD or by credit card, (and) insist that the company not bill
your account until it ships the order.
3. Avoid companies that require surcharges.
4. Read the fine print at the bottom of ads for any asterisks.
5. Call the company for explanations of unclear caveats or disclaimers.
6. Start small (by) ordering only inexpensive products ... until you
establish confidence in it.
P.S. Seek written recourse from the credit card firm for non-performanace
following procedures usually printed on their montly statements.
